ocr: CONVECTION ZONE A layer in a star in which convection is the main mechanism by which energy is transported outward. In the Sun a convection zone extends from just below the photo- sphere to about thirty percent of the solar radius. In the interior the energy is trans- ported through radiation (therefore radiative zone).
